better against the obama that was debating this week? >> i think so, piers, but, you know, it would sound like i am now trying to rewrite history or i would have done better. you know, i've never tried to do any of that looking back and certainly not in anger or bitterness. but i think it is true that during the 2008 campaign, the president or then-senator obama had no record to defend. and one of the reasons why mitt did so well in this debate was because mitt was, i think, very legitimately attacking his record, whether it be the $90 billion in subsidies for energy or a number of the other things that -- the failure of dodd/frank, and so the president had a record to defend this time. but, one, do not underestimate the president of the united states. he will come back strong. i think mitt has to be prepared for that. and also, as you mentioned, these job numbers will give him a bit of -- or something of a boost today. >> we've got the vp debate coming up. you said about joe biden he's the gift that keeps on giving. are you hoping that he's going to be giving some sprinkling of pre

the first debate and strong performance by romney and weak by obama, probably means romney will at the end of the series have a gain. the gain is the impact is generally two to three points which may not sound like much, but when you're in a close as a race as this one is, and it is close. the track is five points as you said. take a look. there's 91 polls in the last 30 days, 91 national polls, not state polls, national polls, and the margin's been over two points. if mitt romney moves up two points and president obama moves down two points, there's another contest here with somebody else in front. lou: look at the swing states, looking at rasmussen, romney ahead in virginia and in ohio, romney a point behind the president where there was a significant lead, as you know, for the president. this is having some influence early. is it likely to be more profound as days go on? >> well, in all likelihood, this will build itself in for three or four more days here. there could be a lengthened -- and then the vice presidential debate that i suspect ryan takes care of biden in good form,

obama until the denver debate. now this race is tight and very much in flux. gwen: let's talk about the trend lines. the president can still claim 31 months of unsbrurmented job growth but mitt romney just made that point about how if different things were true this would be 11%. does he have a point? >> well, you can take statistics and play with them all you want. yes, if people weren't leaving, if people weren't dropping out of the job search process then there would be more people in it. ok. but what's important is the number. and the number is good for obama in the psychological way and also if you look historically. what we've just been through in the past year is one of the -- the changes are tiny, but one of the longest declines in the unemployment rate since 1984, so that's a very good trend for the president and public opinion polls have been sending these mixed signals. the most recent "wall street journal" poll had the wrong track number sky high, 60%. but of those who felt like the economy was improving and would continue to get better, it was like 54%. so something has

enough to cancel out obama's debate performance, or will there be continued damage? >> i don't think there's any comparison. the jobs reports are about real people and real lives and where the economy is going. the debate was, as i said, just sort of important theater, and -- but if i -- i actually watched the debate again yesterday just to try to get it. president obama didn't do so badly. he was much quieter. he was more thoughtful. he got a lot of facts out. it was just very wonky. but when push comes to shove, the policies that president obama's for, whether it's promoting the middle class, looking to support education, not wanting to see the health care cuts that are in the romney/ryan plan, those policies supporting women are much more popular than mitt romney's policies, and i think that the obama team is going to kind of double down on that over the next few weeks. >> let's talk about a piece on cnn.com. you gave president obama some tips on how to win the first debate. >> right. >> writing in part, this is a great little read. you wrote my final piece of advice is most simpl
